How do I find conference chairs that will fit under a conference table?

This is a question we hear often. Some customers spend a lot of time and expense searching for chairs and returning orders in an attempt to purchase conference chairs that will completely fit under a conference table.

The answer is that few conference chairs are low enough in height so that they will always fit under any conference table. The typical conference table is about 29” high. When you allow for the thickness of the top you will have a clearance of less than 28” underneath the table. Most people seated at the table will have their chair adjusted so that the arm height is at, or slightly below, the level of the table. The front edge of the seat of their chair will be in an approximate vertical line with the edge of the table. So as you can see, there is no requirement for a conference chair to fit under a conference table while in use.

For storage, it is often possible to lower the height of each chair to the point where it will fit under the table, but this means the user must then raise the chair each time it is used. This also means that if the user raises the too-low chair while seated they will likely rub the top of the armrest on the edge of the conference table -- eventually causing wear and damage to the armrest and edge of the table.

The most important factors for your conference chair purchase are comfort, appearance, and price -- not whether the chair will completely slide under your conference table.
